MY FAVOURITE BOOK of Homer’s Odyssey is Book Six. Let me refresh your memory. Odysseus is at the low point of his entire Odyssey, shipwrecked, alone, the sole survivor of the disaster, almost drowned, just managing to haul himself ashore onto the beach for what may well be his last night on Earth (wild beasts abound, and wilder men). He finds a pair of thick bushes, thorn and olive, growing from the same spot, to shelter under, and falls asleep.
