On Monday 2nd October 2006, cities around the world marked the celebrations of World Habitat Day (WHD) which was officially launched at a glittering waterfront ceremony in the ancient Italian city of Naples.

In an age where half of humankind live in cities, UN-HABITAT (The United Nations Human Settlements Programme) selected ‘Cities: Magnets of Hope’ as their theme for the day. This theme highlights the fact that the world is experiencing the largest migration of people into towns and cities in its history.
