IN MAY 2006, the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta was hit by a massive earthquake. One and a half million people were made homeless, 350,000 homes were destroyed and 5,722 people were killed. The recovery and reconstruction process will take many years.

Thousands of those hit by the quake are either small subsistence farmers or people working for home-based cottage industries. With workshops and houses destroyed, many survivors have no income, no insurance, little if any money in the bank and no other assets.
