Wild apples are found throughout Central Asia, China, Japan, North America and Europe including northern Greece. The most ancient of species, Malus sieversii from Central Asia, a Siberian cold-hardy type named Malus baccata, and our own crab apple, Malus sylvestris, are all thought to have contributed to the orchard fruit we have today.
