Shakti: Do you think the word ‘beauty’ has lost its depth?

Ruth: It is not only beauty, or the beautiful, that has been eroded, but lots of other words too. The word ‘poetry’ is often used in a light and superficial way. Like ‘the poetry of football’. I think it is part of a more general phenomenon – things that have always meant a lot are now thinned and used superficially.

Shakti: Your writing is beautiful. Are you conscious of beauty when you write?

Ruth: No. You want to make it work. Poetry is putting words together so ...
