IN THE PAST the agenda of public discourse has edged further and further towards the social dimensions of sustainability. I think it is right that now we are squarely back on environmental territory, with the publication of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the fascinating commentaries provided by many activists and public intellectuals. The authors of the report have, I believe, done an excellent job of assessing the scale of the environmental challenges we face and – through the much shorter statement they have created for a non-specialist readership – communicating them to a wider audience. ...
