I FOUNDED THE Green Belt Movement thirty years ago to respond to environmental challenges, which I observed both during my childhood and while working at the University of Nairobi and the National Council of Women of Kenya. These challenges included loss of indigenous forests and local biodiversity, soil erosion, lack of clean drinking water, malnutrition and lack of firewood. I realised that to live in a clean and healthy environment ought to be a human right.
