Reversing – or at least halting – climate change is represented by many politicians and commentators as though it depended solely upon political will, a determination to act by the powers of the world. It will be solved by a deal between countries to free humanity from the nightmare visions of a world beset by catastrophe – unprecedented storms, raging fires, landslides, earth cracked by drought or swallowed up by floods, and winds that fling houses and cars around like matchwood.
