Resurgence Slow Sunday

Welcome to the Resurgence Slow Sunday initiative.

At several times throughout the year we will nominate one Sunday when we will invite our readers to take part in simple actions that symbolise a rejection of commercialism, a passion for the planet and a desire for change.

Next Slow Sunday • 13 December 2009

With the festive season fast approaching we’ve decided to dedicate this Slow Sunday to the giving of gifts. Presents that are kind to the planet are often also gentle on the wallet - however, the biggest challenge is finding the time to make or source a low-impact offering.

More Information about Slow Sunday

The Resurgence Trust takes its inspiration from two of the most profound philosophies of our time - E.F. Schumacher’s ‘Small is beautiful’ and Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’.

We believe that big change is possible through small, meaningful actions at a local level. It is only by changing our immediate environment that we can pave the way for change on a larger scale. In other words, we can make the world a better place, but it will only happen when large numbers of people join together and practice what they believe in.

The more people who join in and embrace the ethos of Slow Sunday, the greater the impact, so invite your friends, neighbours and local community to take part in a Slow Sunday celebration.

Previous Slow Sundays

The first Resurgence Slow Sunday took place on 27th July 2008 and celebrated baking bread. Find out more about other Resurgence Slow Sunday initiatives:

27th July and 28th September 2008 • Baking Bread

30th November 2008 • Let’s Feast

25th January 2009 • New Year’s Resolutions to serve the planet

31st May 2009 • Spend a day without using any fossil fuels

30th August 2009 • Treat yourself to creativity...

Help Promote Slow Sundays

We would like more people to be involved in our Slow Sunday celebrations. If you think more people should join in to save the planet why not send a press release to your local newspaper or radio station to tell them what you’re doing and why you’re doing it? Here’s a template press release for you to use.

For more information on the ideas that inspired Slow Sunday, see the following articles by Resurgence Editor, Satish Kumar:

Green Sunday • Responding to the climate change crisis by keeping one day a week for the Earth.

Environmental Narratives • Schumacher’s ideas inspired a movement that now brings together leading environmental organisations, activists and thinkers.

The Gandhian Trinity • A template for ecology, peace and social justice.
