‘Gender bender’ endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are having a massive detrimental impact on human health and the economy in the United States and the European Union valued at over US$550 billion, according to a new study in The Lancet. The impact is greatest in the US, owing to its generally weaker regulatory regime.

The greatest damage done by the chemicals, which mimic natural hormones in the body, is to human intelligence. This is mainly caused by flame retardants known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), widely used in building materials, electronics, furnishings, motor vehicles, ...
