I VISITED CHELIO’S family, belonging to a Rathwa tribe, whom I have known for many years. Chelio was a versatile man. I often saw him painting, building a house, carving a spoon, making a jar, or climbing a palm tree to get palm juice.
When I visited his family, I saw a piece of string lying on the floor. I liked it very much. I asked him, “Where did you get it from?” Pointing to his grandmother he said, “She made it.” Then he pointed to the tree in his backyard and said, “The string is made from its bark.”
