PROTESTERS HALT COAL MINING AS BONN TALKS OPEN

As the UN Climate Conference (COP23) talks were being held in Bonn, Germany in November, a diverse array of peaceful protest was flourishing on the fringes. The day before the talks began, climate protectors came together in the Rhineland coalfields – Europe’s largest source of CO2 emissions – just 50km from the city. Around 4,500 activists under the banner Ende Gelände (‘Here and No Further’) evaded police lines to enter the vast Hambach coal mine, where they managed to shut down three coal excavators as well as a conveyor belt for hours.
