It was on a trip to Costa Rica during the dry season that I met the conservationist Jim Barborak. A nocturnal tour in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve was a special occasion, giving us the chance to experience Nature’s wonders at night and to learn more about some of Costa Rica’s exceptional biodiversity.

The reserve covers 5,000ha and encompasses a landscape of spectacular misty tropical forest with limbs draped in orchids, moss and ferns. We spied tiny birds sleeping in trees, saw tarantulas hidden in rocky crevices, and, on a red infrared-lit veranda, dodged small fruit bats ...
