MARIA MONTESSORI WAS born in Chiaravalle, Italy in 1870, the year Italy became a unified nation. Her parents were both devoted to the ideals of liberation and union. She was a confident and strong-willed child, and her upbringing encouraged her optimism, her interest in change and her belief in the possibility of effecting it.
