CONSERVATION: SEAHORSES SOLD FOR POULTRY FEED IN INDIA

Seahorses caught by trawlers in India are being sold for use as poultry feed or fishmeal at “throwaway prices” despite a ban on catching and trading the animals, according to a report in The Times of India.

Smaller seahorses are often sold unsorted for rates as low as 2 cents per kilogram, according to Tanvi Vaidhyanathan, who is conducting research for conservation group Project Seahorse. “Even in the places where they found value in selling them individually, seahorses would end up in the trawled catch,” Vaidhyanathan told Resurgence ...
