BUNDS TO HELP BUILD BLANKET BOGS

Conservationists in Marsden Moor, England are testing a new technique to improve the condition of blanket bogs. The trial, part of the MoorLIFE2020 project, involves building long, narrow mounds, called bunds, to retain water in shallow pools and encourage the growth of key bog-building sphagnum moss. If successful, the bogs will not only help sequester carbon, but also potentially reduce flooding in valleys below, reduce the risk of wildfires and improve biodiversity.
