Occasionally, when I open my computer, the wallpaper that appears is this gorgeous, effulgent red coral reef in turquoise water, and I feel crestfallen knowing that we have, in all likelihood, killed off this wondrous life form once and for all.

Of course, those of us who live in a relatively temperate European climate are cushioned from the ultra-extremes of a dangerously warming planet. In terms of killer landslides, Category 5 storms, raging wildfires, excruciating summer temperatures and melting permafrost, it is the global south and the Arctic north that remain most exposed.
