IN SEPTEMBER 2004 I went on a pilgrimage through the Northeast with a few of my students. We began at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts – the site of the first battle of the American Revolution, the place where the “shot heard ’round the world” was fired. From there we walked to New York City, where we did sitting meditation and held a public ceremony at Ground Zero. From New York I walked to Washington, DC, where I did a closing ceremony and offering at the site of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This pilgrimage lasted five and a half weeks from beginning to end.
