WHAT IS ECOLOGY?
Satish Kumar’s editorial The Ecozoic Era (Issue 279) worries me.
The first principle of ecology is not living in harmony. Ecology is a way of understanding the systemic relationships between organisms and environments. Ecologists often describe ecologies in terms of energy transfers – which include food chains. Mice eating grains, and owls eating mice are equally ‘ecological’. Ecologies can be harmonious, but they can also be discordant.
I also think you do Stewart Brand a disservice. I remember the Whole Earth Catalog and CoEvolution Quarterly as wonderfully inspiring reminders ...
