Our present thinking and behaving about biospheres tends to be destructive of the life system. There is not just a CO2 problem on the planet. There is a biospheric problem. An increasing CO2 content in the air is but a symptom, not the disease. The real problem is the entrenched attitude that the biosphere is an ‘environment’ to exploit rather than enrich. UNESCO has a programme called Man and the Biosphere. Inaccurate. We humans are part of the biosphere; we are not separate. Our own actions cause the biosphere problem, and our actions stem from defects in our ideas, institutions, and values.
