Before I read Who Owns England? by Guy Shrubsole, I had no idea how ignorant I was about land ownership in this country. I had a pretty strong notion that our cities had been hollowed out by offshore money, just as I knew that swathes of our countryside were still in the hands of aristocrats. However, I assumed that it was at least theoretically possible to put together a full map of land ownership in England. I was wrong.
Even the Land Registry only accounts for just over 80% of England. Suddenly I realised why who owns England was worth asking.
