Electric vehicles will help reduce air pollution, noise and carbon emissions, although alone they are not enough. It’s a similar story with cutting noise on the road. Vehicle noise is created by a combination of rolling noise (arising from the tyres interacting with the road) and propulsion noise (comprising noise from engines, exhaust systems, transmissions and brakes). As a rule of thumb, tyre–road interaction is the main source of noise at above 25–35mph for cars and at above about 40–43mph for lorries, with engine noise predominating at lower speeds.
