I have just spent a few days volunteering at the Othona Community near Bridport in Dorset. The Othona communities are places dedicated to simple living, a light impact on the Earth and a down-to-earth spirituality centred on Christianity but open to all. They work hard to offer low-cost retreats to those in need. These are causes I believe in, but still, as I drove there, I questioned my sanity.
I was leaving behind a house full of incomplete DIY projects and a garden that was like a jungle. Why on earth, I thought, was I giving my time to patch up someone else’s buildings and tend the gardens? ...
