Heike Roesel is a printmaker based in Brighton. She graduated from the University of Brighton in 1996 with a BA in Fine Art Printmaking. In 2009 she began to develop her own technique of acrylic resist etching and has been creating her intaglio prints in this way ever since.
Heike's etchings portray semi-abstract, imaginative worlds. The inspiration for these worlds comes from life. The city Heike lives in and the surrounding landscape are a constant source of ideas. She begins the creative process with a loose idea for an image, which is then worked up through drawings. She finds the process and the materials influence the way the imagery is developed. But the real development happens while she is working on the etching plate, pushing the initial idea through to a conclusion. The resulting imagery is never a representation of the circumstance or object that initially inspired it, but an improvisation of this original idea, finally becoming 'a world in its own right'.
Heike hopes to inspire observers' imagination, so that they can discover their own individual 'pictures' in her etchings. She likes to send people's minds on a joyful journey, where they find new aspects in her work every time they look.
Heike exhibits her work annually in Brighton's Artists Open Houses Festival and at art fairs and galleries throughout the UK. She also offers workshops in her unique etching technique from her Brighton studio. For more details visit www.heikeroesel.co.uk.
