Against the will of citizens and farmers, and overriding the sovereignty of member states, the EU has authorised production of a genetically modified (GM) potato, in an unexpected administrative measure that completely disregards the precautionary principle. Despite strongly voiced concerns by numerous environmental organisations, John Dalli, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, has approved the cultivation of the ‘Amflora’ GM potato, which has been modified to contain a higher percentage of starch and which is produced by the German multinational BASF.
