A few years ago, when the Crafts Council invited me to a press lunch at Somerset House I wore a jacket and skirt, expecting it to be a ladylike do – and I was not disappointed. Out of 20 or so present, there were only four men, if you count me. Most things to do with the craft world have this gender imbalance. For me, as a machophobe, this was always one of its chief attractions.
