A Dual Agenda

Reading Animals: A New Ethics (Resurgence 271) required the equivalent of a hard hat on a building site. It was dangerous to look away from the page lest the known world came crashing down around my feet. Being brought up in a meat-and-two-veg environment as I was, this issue moved me greatly.

In Mark Gold’s journey through the dark world of the slaughterhouse, I reeled constantly from an intensity of shame, to revulsion, at the devilishness of the whole process. The visions described stay with me.
