CONSUMERISM VS MATERIALISM

Re Satish’s ‘Elegant Simplicity’ and Jill Evans’s response.

Whenever people talk about the need to move to a simpler lifestyle it worries me. I fear it may put a lot of people off, but I also think it misses the point. Whether a person is a minimalist or a hoarder is almost irrelevant – what matters is throughput. A minimalist may be consuming vast amounts and just throwing it away. I think the more important division is between consumerism and materialism. Consumerism bad, materialism good.

The consumerist does not value material things, but acquires them ...
