I am the product of the American dream: all my grandparents were immigrants and refugees. Because of their resilience, determination and luck, I exist and have the opportunities I do. My grandfather loved to share how, in 1928, he witnessed the Statue of Liberty through the fog, a symbol of arrival and new beginnings. I now see my grandparents in the refugees and other immigrants coming to the US today. Our newest neighbours deserve their own symbolic welcome. So I launched Welcome Blanket, a national network of people sharing stories and symbols of warmth – over 6,000 so far.
